Many organisations work on the premise that if you are competent at your job you will be competent at managing others in that job. Alas that is often not the case and although it is possible to learn from experience how to best manage others, that experience is often bought at the cost of demotivated employees, resignations and lost clients.

Leaders exist at all levels of an organisation, whether they have direct team leadership responsibility or not.

Leadership is about engaging people so they willingly follow you in the direction your organisation is going. It therefore requires a leader to influence others to achieve this, a leader needs to develop the trust and respect of his or her team.

This is where coaching combined with leadership workshops will help. In one study reported in the Personnel Management Journal, it was shown that managers who were trained and coached were 88% more effective as leaders, where as those who were just trained and not coached saw only a 22% increase in their effectiveness.

Leadership workshops may provide the understanding, but it is coaching and or mentoring which helps the manager to overcome any limiting beliefs and translate this understanding into new leadership practise in the workplace.
